Microsoft is scheduled to hold its Build Developer Conference from April 2-4, and it's expected that the Redmond company will use that stage to officially introduce us to Windows Phone 8.1. Apparently we won't have to wait until April to get a some fresh Microsoft news, though, as the firm has announced that it's got another shindig planned for the week before Build.

The folks over at Re/code have received an invitation to a Microsoft event that's taking place in San Francisco on March 27. The exact topic of discussion is unknown, but Microsoft says that it'll focus on "the intersection of cloud and mobile computing." New Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will be hosting the event.

So what might Microsoft have up its sleeve for this March 27 event? Since many expect Windows Phone 8.1 to debut at Build the following week, that seems an unlikely candidate. Re/code points out that Microsoft has long talked about making apps and services available to more mobile platforms, like Office for iPad, and so that could be one of the topics of discussion. Thankfully we won't be kept in the dark much longer, as March 27 is just 10 days away. UPDATE: According to sources speaking to both Reuters and The Verge, Microsoft will introduce Office for iPad at its March 27 event. The app will reportedly look similar to the iPhone app that launched in June 2013 and will support Word, PowerPoint and Excel document creation and editing. It's expected that Microsoft will require users to pony up for an Office 365 subscription in order to do any sort of editing with the Office for iPad app.
