A little over a year after Sprint launched its Sprint As You Go prepaid brand, the big yellow operator has retired the offering in favor of a new service known simple as Sprint Prepaid. The service offers smartphone plans that start at a rate of $45 per month as well as basic phone plans that start at $35 per month. Here's how the rate plans break down:
Smartphones
Basic phones
There are currently four smartphones that are compatible with the new Sprint Prepaid service. Those include the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini with Sprint Spark compatibility, the LTE-enabled Samsung Galaxy S III, the Moto G and a pre-owned iPhone 4S. Sprint says that more devices, both smartphones and feature phones, will be added throughout 2014.
Sprint plans to continue to offer prepaid service through Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile. The operator says that, like Sprint As You Go, Sprint Prepaid is intended for consumers that like the Sprint brand but want to avoid contracts and credit checks.
One difference between Sprint As You Go and Sprint Prepaid is that the former offered unlimited and unthrottled data, while Sprint Prepaid's unlimited data users will be throttled after 2.5GB of usage. It is worth noting, though, that Sprint Prepaid's unlimited plan is $10 cheaper than the Sprint As You Go plan.
In other Sprint news, Ol' Yellow announced today that its now offering the Moto X with Moto Maker in its retail stores. Consumers can select either a 16GB or 32GB Moto X, pay for it in-store and then receive a PIN that they can then redeem on Motorola's online Moto Maker customization tool. The Moto X is priced at $49.99 and $99.99 for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively, with a two-year contract and $50 mail-in rebate.
