Sprint confirms Android 4.4 updates for several Samsung Galaxy devices

Sprint has kept itself pretty busy lately by pushing Android 4.4 updates out to several of its smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and Galaxy Note 3. Today the big yellow carrier promised to keep its update steam going, confirming that KitKat updates for several other Samsung Galaxy-branded products are in the pipeline.

In total, Sprint says that it plans to update five other Samsung Galaxy devices to the newest version of Android. The list of lucky products includes the Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy Mega and Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. Sprint didn't reveal when these Android 4.4.2 updates will actually begin rolling out, saying instead that it'll share that information at a later date, but it did name several features that the updates will contain:

  • Location Menu: An integrated location menu enables users to easily activate GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks, while simultaneously checking the battery usage of apps running location service capabilities.
  • Enhanced Messaging: Hangouts now includes SMS and MMS and a larger assortment of updated Emoji icons.
  • Upgraded Google Mobile Service™ (GMS) apps: Users can automatically back up photos and video and can open, view, rename and share Google Docs and files.
  • Updated Lock Screen Features: The lock screen now allows users to quickly access the camera with a new shortcut and view album art while music is playing.

Samsung confirmed last month that it planned to put together Android 4.4.2 updates for these five Galaxy devices, but it's still good to see Sprint commit to pushing KitKat to its customers. Sure, we may not know exactly when these updates will arrive, but at least we know that they're coming. Stay tuned and I'll give you a shout once we get more details on Sprint's rollout plans are available.
