Back at the tail end of January, BlackBerry teased that it was working on a version of its BBM for Android app that would work with Gingerbread-powered hardware, which make up one-fifth of Android devices. Fast-forward to today and the official BBM for Android app has been updated to include support for Gingerbread devices, giving users on Android 2.3 the opportunity to snag a PIN and begin BBM-ing their iOS, Android and BlackBerry brethren.

Prior to today's update, the BBM for Android app was compatible with devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and higher. The addition of support for Gingerbread hardware may not seem like a big deal, but it's actually a pretty important move for BlackBerry that opens BBM up to a large group of new users. According to Google's most recent Android platform distribution numbers, Gingerbread claims the second-largest group of users behind Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean, and so it's smart for BlackBerry to make its BBM app work with Gingerbread devices.
