We're now deep into earnings season, with companies like Verizon and Nokia having already shared the results of their most recent quarters. Today it's Apple's turn.
The Cupertino firm just announced the results for the first quarter of its fiscal 2014, which ended on Dec. 28, 2013. Apple reports that it sold 51 million iPhones during that three-month period, a stat that's not only up from the 47.8 million it sold in the year-ago quarter, but it also happens to be an all-time quarterly record. Sales of the iPad also set an all-time quarterly record, reaching a total of 26 million units, which is up from the 22.9 million iPads that Apple sold in Q1 2013.
“We are really happy with our record iPhone and iPad sales, the strong performance of our Mac products and the continued growth of iTunes, Software and Services. We love having the most satisfied, loyal and engaged customers, and are continuing to invest heavily in our future to make their experiences with our products and services even better," said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.
On the financial side of things, Apple pulled in record revenue of $57.6 billion during the quarter along with $13.1 billion in net profit. To compare, Apple's Q1 2013 results included revenue of $54.5 billion and net profit of $13.1 billion.
Overall it sounds like Apple had itself a pretty nice quarter, no? Perhaps the most interesting part of Apple's results is its Mac sales, which has been fluctuating in recent months but grew from 4.1 million in Q1 2013 and 4.6 million in Q4 2013 to finish at 4.8 million this quarter. Meanwhile, it looks like the iPhone and iPad hardware did pretty well over the holidays, likely aided by the recent releases of the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display.
As is usually the case with earnings reports, Apple will be holding a conference call at 5:00 p.m. ET to discuss its results. I'll endure the classical hold music and listen in on the call, just in case Tim Cook and Co. have any other juicy tidbits of info to share.
Did you get any new iOS or Mac hardware over the holiday season? If so, what'd you score?
UPDATE: Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer says that 80 percent of iOS devices are now running iOS 7.
