We've seen both AT&T and Sprint make changes to their early upgrade programs in the past month or so, with the former adding a lengthier pay-off period and the latter killing its original plan and replacing it with a new one. Now Verizon has revealed that it, too, is tweaking its own upgrade program.
Verizon announced today that Edge customers can now upgrade to a new device after just 30 days, which is a much shorter wait than the 6-month period that they previously had to endure. Subscribers must still pay off half the cost of their existing device and also trade that hardware in before upgrading to a new piece of kit. Verizon describes the policy change as a promotion but adds that it has not set a concrete end date for it.
It's always good to see carriers allow their customers to upgrade on a more frequent basis, so this Verizon Edge change is a welcome one. Of course, it's still a good idea to weigh the costs and policies related to a program like Verizon Edge before actually signing up for it, especially if you find yourself lusting after a new handset every couple of months. If you're on Big Red and feel like Edge is a good fit for you, though, at least now you'll be able to move to a new smartphone just about as often as you'd like, so long as you've got the cash to pay for at least half of 'em.
