The Nokia Camera application debuted earlier this year as a combination of two of Nokia's previous apps, Pro Cam and Smart Cam, giving Windows Phone users access to more imaging modes and video features than the standard WP camera app offers. However, the app has only been available to Nokia devices with PureView-branded cameras since its debut. That's changing today, as a new Nokia Camera beta app has been announced for other Lumia models.
The new Nokia Camera beta app is being offered as part of the Nokia Beta Labs program. The app is meant to available to all Lumia models running Windows Phone 8 and features the same look and feature set as the standard Nokia Camera app. That'll change over time, though, as Nokia intends on adding new features to the app to test them out before they're pushed to the stable version of the Nokia Camera app that's available through the Windows Phone store.
While it's somewhat understandable that Nokia would want to focus its special Camera app on its camera-centric PureView-branded models, it's always been kind of a bummer that owners of lower-end Lumia handsets haven't been able to get the app as well, especially since both the phones and the app are made by Nokia. Thankfully that's no longer the case, and what makes today's release even more exciting for owners of non-PureView handsets is that they'll get to test out experimental Nokia Camera features as part of the beta process.
The Nokia Camera beta app is now available for download through the Nokia Beta Labs website. The app requires either the Lumia Amber or Lumia Black software and is compatible with the Lumia 520, Lumia 521, Lumia 620, Lumia 625, Lumia 720, Lumia 810, Lumia 820, and Lumia 822.
