Gmail is a big part of life for many folks, especially those using a device powered by Google's own Android operating system. That's why, when the Gmail for Android app receives an update, it's a big deal for a lot of people.
It turns out that today will be one of those big days, as Google has announced that a new update to the Gmail for Android app is now rolling out users everywhere. The update brings with it a new conversation view with a card-based design that Google has been all about lately. Also included are a number of other design tweaks, like checkmarks that appear when a user selects multiple messages for moving, archiving or deletion, as well as an alert that will tell users in the app if their account sync is off.
While not exactly an earth-shattering update, this new version of Gmail for Android sounds like it's got a handful of goodies packed into it that brings it more in line with Google's design philosophy and make using the app itself easier. That's always a good thing. If you're rocking an Android phone or tablet, expect this new version of Gmail for Android to hit in the coming days.
UPDATE: Google has also issued a pretty big update to its official Hangouts app. The update, which brings the app up to version 1.2, will show which of a user's friends are online (green icon) and which aren't (gray icon). Also included is contacts that are organized by People You Hangout With, Suggested People and Other Contacts, the ability to hide contacts from the New Hangouts screen with a long press, invites that are placed above conversations so that they're easier to find and pinch-to-zoom functionality for images.
Just as with the new Gmail for Android app, expect the Hangouts v1.2 update to roll out to users in the coming days.
