Remember that mysterious NVIDIA "Tegra Tab" device that leaked out last month? Turns out that it's the real deal, and today NVIDIA has given us the skinny on its latest Tegra-powered tablet offering.
Dubbed the "Tegra Note," NVIDIA describes its new device as a full platform that's designed in-house and then distributed to the market by its partners. NVIDIA explains that its new Note "embodies the NVIDIA brand," including OTA software updates direct from NVIDIA, and that the device gives the company's partners access to feature-packed devices while providing NVIDIA with product distribution knowledge.
As for the Tegra Note itself, the device features a 7-inch 1280x800 IPS display and VGA camera on its face, as well as a 5-megapixel shooter around back. Because this is an NVIDIA device, it should come as no surprise that there's a quad-core Tegra 4 processor at the Tegra Note's heart, along with 16GB storage and a microSD card slot. Also included is a set of front-facing speakers and, since the word "Note" is right in its name, the Tegra Note comes bundled with a stylus as well.
NVIDIA says that the Tegra Note is "100% Android" and that it's running "the latest version of the OS." The device is slated to begin rolling out to market next month with a suggested retail price of $199, and NVIDIA promises that there will be a wide range of accessories available to help buyers deck out their new tablet, including a slide cover and a DirectStylus Pro Pack that features interchangeable stylus tips.
This isn't the first time that NVIDIA has attacked the tablet market with affordable Android hardware. Last year the company introduced the Project Kai platform, which was meant to help manufacturers launch quad-core Android tablets at low prices. Now NVIDIA is back with Tegra 4 and the Tegra Note, which is an interesting device thanks its combination of a Tegra 4 chipset, $199 price tag and software updates that come direct from NVIDIA. We'll have to withhold any final judgments for now, but any consumers in the market for a smaller Android tablet may want to keep an eye on the Tegra Note.
