Apparently the FCC is a good place to go for information on unannounced Nexus hardware. Just a week after an FCC filing revealed a handful of details on what may be LG and Google's new Nexus 5 smartphone, the agency has posted several external and internal photos of what appears to be the same device flashed during a Google video posted earlier this month.
The images were discovered by PhoneScoop inside of the filing for the Verizon version of the LG G2. LG wanted to make a "class 2 permissive change" to the entry in order to make note of some hardware alterations, but in the process of updating the listing, the FCC published photos of a device that's clearly not Verizon's LG G2.
Neither LG nor Google have made any announcements regarding a follow-up to 2012's Nexus 4, but an unidentified device with LG and Nexus branding appeared briefly during a Google-made Android 4.4. KitKat video that some believe may have been a new Nexus phone. The video was quickly pulled by Google. Shortly afterward, an FCC filing for an "LG-D820" surfaced with details that suggested that the filing was for a new Nexus, including photos of rear cover that's similar to the one from the Google video as well as a reference to Key Lime Pie (Android 4.4's internal codename).
It's not clear when Google might introduce a new Nexus smartphone, but there is some evidence to suggest that an announcement could be near. Not only did the company recently announce a new version of Android and flash this mysterious Nexus device, but it also recently cut the price of the LG Nexus 4 by $100. Once the 8GB model sold out, Google said that it had no plans to restock its inventory. We're also coming up on the anniversary of the Nexus 4's debut, and once a device reaches its first birthday in the mobile world, that typically means that its replacement isn't far off.
