Sony recently continued its streak of making unlocked Xperia smartphones available to consumers in the U.S. by adding the Xperia M to its online shop. Originally introduced in June, the Xperia M features a 4-inch 854x480 display and VGA camera on its face, as well as a second 5-megapixel shooter on its backside. Packed inside the Xperia M's frame is a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 4GB storage, microSD slot, 1GB RAM and a 1,700mAh battery.
As far as connectivity goes, this Android 4.1 Jelly Bean smartphone supports GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and UMTS/HSPA+ (850/1700/1900/2100MHz), meaning that it should play nicely with AT&T and T-Mobile here in the U.S. The device also comes unlocked, so buyers will be able to just pop in their SIM card and be on their way.
The Xperia M is currently listed in Sony's online shop in black, white, yellow and purple variants. The purple model is currently out of stock, but the other three versions are available for $249.99 and estimated to ship on Sept. 11. Newegg appears to have all four colors available for the same price.
The Xperia M may not be the highest-end handset in Sony's lineup, but its $249.99 unlocked price tag could make it worth a look for consumers that just need an affordable smartphone. Even if you're not actually considering a purchase of the Xperia M, though, it's worth acknowledging that Sony continues to offer several of its Xperia smartphones to U.S. consumers in unlocked form.
