Verizon's already made a couple of big changes to the ways that its customers can upgrade their phones in 2013, but it looks like the big red carrier may not be done quite yet. According to a leaked document shared by Droid-Life, Verizon is planning to introduce a new program dubbed "VZ Edge" that will allow customers to spread out the full cost of a device, then upgrade to a new one anytime after half of that product is paid off. The VZ Edge plan is reportedly slated to launch on August 25.
The internal doc positions VZ Edge as a way for Verizon subscribers to avoid contracts and upgrade fees while also having access to the latest hardware. Unfortunately, this leak doesn't go into any kind of great detail about the VZ Edge program, so it's not clear what kind of fine print might be attached to it.
Verizon began allowing customers to pay for new hardware on installments through its Device Payment Program earlier this year, and now it looks like the operator is taking things a step further with this VZ Edge plan. The program could be big for Verizon customers that frequently find themselves drooling over new mobile hardware, especially since the full retail price of smartphones isn't exactly cheap. There are still some details about VZ Edge that need to be revealed, though, so for now Verizon folk may want to try and temper their excitement.
