Just as expected, Google I/O 2013 came and went without a single mention of the Nexus Q, Google's streaming media orb that debuted at I/O 2012 and was then "postponed" a month after launch. El Goog actually hasn't said much of anything about the Nexus Q or any other similar device since last year, but a new FCC filing has revealed that the company could have a similar, media-focused device in the works.
The FCC listing names "Google Inc." as the applicant and brand name, and it says that the device in question has a product name of "H840 DEVICE" and a model number of "H2G2-42," which may be a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference. The filing goes on to reveal that this mystery product is a "media player" that features 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. Additionally, the FCC says that one of its tests involved hooking it up to a Dell monitor with the device's USB port and that the H840 has an AC/DC power supply accessory that "must be provided with every unit sold." No images or sketches of the device itself are included with the filing.
While we do know that this mysterious H840 product is a media player, it's kind of tough to glean much more about it with the information in the FCC's report. It's certainly possible that we could be looking at some sort of streaming media product in the vein of the Nexus Q, especially considering Google's recent launch of its All Access music service. However, we'll just have to wait for Google to officially announce this thing to find out exactly what it is.
