AT&T has taken the wraps off of its latest 4G LTE mobile broadband device, known as the AT&T Beam. Launching on May 10 for $19.99 with a two-year commitment, the Beam is a USB modem that's manufactured by Sierra Wireless, the same company that makes AT&T's Unite mobile hotspot. Much like the Unite hotspot, the Beam features an on-device LCD screen that can display a network indicator, signal strength and data usage.
In addition to its LCD screen, the Beam features global roaming support and a microSD slot that can support cards up to 32GB in size. The unit supports Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows RT. Beam owners on Windows 7 will have access to a special feature using the AT&T AllAccess software that will turn the modem into a mobile hotspot with support up to 10 Wi-Fi-capable devices at once.
While many folks may prefer portable hotspot devices for their on-the-go data needs, the AT&T Beam looks like it could offer the best of a hotspot and a USB modem thanks to its ability to share its connection with 10 other pieces of hardware. If the Beam sounds like it'd be up your alley, you can pass the time until it hits shelves on May 10 by perusing AT&T's official announcement, which is available at the link below.
