The rumor mill has teased that the upcoming GDR2 update for Windows Phone 8 will bring with it FM radio support and some Nokia Lumia-specific goodies, but one tidbit of information that hasn't been revealed quite yet is exactly when that update will begin rolling out to users. Today a bit more light may have been shed on the GDR2 update's journey to consumers, though, thanks to a recent comment from a representative for Australian carrier Telstra.
In response to a question about the GDR2 and 1308 updates for the Nokia Lumia 920, the Telstra rep says that Nokia expects to submit GDR2 for carrier testing in mid-May. No other details about the update or its features are given. However, the rep does promise to have schedule details in an upcoming status update post.
This Telstra rep's comment on GDR2 doesn't really reveal much information on the actual rollout of the update, but testing purportedly slated to get underway later this month, it would seem that GDR2 is at least getting close. Windows Phone fans shouldn't get too worked up quite yet, though, as the testing process can vary between carriers and can lead to different rollout schedules.
Like the Portico/GDR1 update that began rolling out late last year, GDR2 is expected to be a somewhat minor Windows Phone update. Nokia is expected to include a few notable features for Lumia users alongside the aforementioned FM radio support, though, including a new optional lock screen clock and a "double tap to wake" ability. Now we just need to wait and hope that the GDR2 update breezes through its carrier testing and begins arriving on devices soon so that the Windows Phone crowd can actually begin enjoying these new features.
