It wasn't that long ago that Windows Phone gained support for 720p screen resolutions, but according to a new rumor, Microsoft is planning to roll 1080p support into its mobile platform in the near future. Sources speaking to The Verge claim that Microsoft is planning to include support for 1080p displays in its General Distribution Release 3 (GDR3) update that's slated to arrive later this year. That's not the only big, new feature that's reportedly coming in GDR3, though, as the update is also said to be bringing support for devices with screens that measure 5 inches and larger as well as new quad-core Qualcomm processors.
This new GDR3 update is expected to come with some new devices later in 2013, following the GDR1 (also known as "Portico") update that first arrived late in 2012 and the GDR2 update, which is expected to hit in the coming months with FM radio support in tow. While the details of this GDR3 update aren't official until Microsoft makes 'em so, today's rumor suggests that GDR3 will be a pretty major update for the Windows Phone platform and could bring with it some new hardware that'll have Windows Phone fans whipping out their wallets during the holiday season.
One other small tidbit of Windows Phone news relates to the Blue update that's been rumored in recent months. We've always known that the Windows Phone Blue update would come after Microsoft's three GDR releases, but the actual timing of the update has always been up in the air. The Verge suggests that Blue is now slated to arrive sometime in early 2014. Windows Phone Blue is expected to bring with it some user experience enhancements and a tighter integration between Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, including browser syncing.
