It looks like Verizon Wireless is kicking off its work week with a big purchase, as the big red carrier announced this morning that it now owns Mohave Wireless, an operator that serves northwest Arizona. Verizon recently completed its purchase of partnership interests in Mohave Wireless from Frontier Communications and Rio Virgin Telephone, giving it 100 percent control of Mohave. The exact terms of the details aren't being shared at this time.
As a result of this deal, Verizon's service footprint in northwest Arizona will be growing. Verizon says that it plans to integrate Mohave's 3G EV-DO network, which covers around 203,000 people, with its own network. Verizon also plans to roll out 4G LTE service at some point "in the near future." Any current Mohave customers will continue to be served under that brand until Verizon full integrates Mohave's network into its own, which is expected to go down in early 2014. Once that happens, Mohave subscribers will receive a letter from Verizon with an explanation of the transition.
This is big news for Mohave Wireless subscribers, who will have the option of transitioning into Verizon customers early next year. It also affects any Verizon customers in the area, as they'll see improved 3G (and eventually 4G) coverage as a result of the integration of Mohave's network into Verizon's. Obviously the entire integration process will take a bit of time to complete, but at least Verizon customers now know that it's coming, and Mohave users have plenty of time to decide what they'll do once the time for their service transition actually comes.
