Twitter has been busy adding new features and services for its social network that don't involve 140-character messages, including photo filters that are built into its apps and the introduction of Vine and its six-second video clips. Now a new rumor claims that Twitter may be gearing up to launch its own music discovery app. According to a CNET source, Twitter plans to introduce a new app called "Twitter Music" on iOS as soon as the end of March.
The report claims that Twitter Music will take advantage of technology that Twitter gained from its acquisition of We Are Hunted, a company that Twitter consumed in 2012. The Twitter Music app will reportedly recommend music to a user by analyzing a number of different pieces of information, including who the user is following on Twitter. It's expected that users will be able to stream music using the app using SoundCloud. Besides offering music recommendations, the app will also reportedly pull in links to songs that people are tweeting about, list music that is popular on We Are Hunted and also show tracks from up-and-coming artists. It's said that a user won't need a Twitter account to use Twitter Music.
As I noted before, this purported Twitter Music app will continue Twitter's effort to be more to users than a service to send out 140 character status updates. The social network is already used by many people to keep up with their favorite artists, and Twitter currently runs its own official @TwitterMusic account that shares various music-related tweets. A Twitter Music app could be an extension of all that, allowing users to listen to music from acts they already know as well as ones that they don't, purchase music that they enjoy follow from iTunes and follow new bands on Twitter. With a purported launch on iOS coming as soon as the end of March, it may not be long before we get to put on our headphones and see what Twitter Music is all about. Does the Twitter Music app sound like something that you might use?
