Sony today announced a new software update for a quartet of Xperia handsets that it says will bring some bug fixes and performance tweaks. The Xperia P, Xperia U, Xperia go and Xperia sola will all be getting treated to some new software, which packs in improvements to Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile hotspot, camera (both capture and playback), NFC, messaging and general stability. It's worth noting that this update is still Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich-based, so owners of these shouldn't go in to the update expecting a bump up to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
As for the rollout itself, Sony says that it has begun sending this new update out to the Xperia P, U, go and sola, adding that the push will continue over the coming weeks, with exact availability dependent on carrier requirements. Users already on ICS will get a notification once the update is ready, while Xperia U, go and sola owners that are still on Android 2.3 Gingerbread will need to update using Sony's PC Companion or Bridge for Mac software.
While I'm sure that many Xperia owners are eager to get a taste of Jelly Bean on their particular device, this maintenance update ought to give users a little new software excitement while they wait. Sony has already named several Xperia models that will be bumped up to Android 4.1, including the Xperia P and Xperia go, but the only models that have an estimated update timeframe so far are the Xperia T, TX and V, which are expected to be updated in mid-Q1 2013. We'll give you a shout once we get details on a more exact timing.
