The event has been canceled due to weather. That’s an understatement, really. Google’s event in New York has been canceled because there’s the “storm of the century” happening in their neck of the woods right now, so the company wisely chose to cancel the event and get back to the waiting world about what they will do next. I’m sure they are trying to figure out the next big date to have their shindig, and hopefully it’s soon. But, now we have to wait.

And waiting is so hard!

Especially when the rumor mill is continuously spilling out the juicy details about the event. Of course, they are still just rumors, but I think at this point we can all safely assume that we really were going to see three new Nexus devices unveiled. And three new Nexus devices is awesome, even if there are apparently going to be more Nexus tablets than smartphones roaming the markets.

So now that the event has been canceled, and we are stuck waiting until who knows when to see what Google has up their sleeve, ready to busy our hands this holiday season (hopefully), I’m left wondering if Google should let Monday go without some kind of device launch. After all, of the three new Nexus devices rumored to be showcased at the event, one of them isn’t really “new,” right?

The 32GB Nexus 7 has been rumored and talked about for quite some time now, and its existence is pretty much a sure thing at this point. And, at this moment, Google only has one Nexus 7 model you can buy through their Play Store, and that’s the 16GB version. It’s still listed as $249.99, and the 8GB model is shown as “coming soon,” so if you want to buy one those are your only options. However, I don’t think picking up a 16GB Nexus 7 at $249 should be on your list of things to do right now. Just wait a bit, because the rumors are also suggesting that Google may drop the price of the 16GB Nexus 7 down to $299, and put that 32GB model smack-dab at the $249 price point.

Rumors, rumors, rumors, wait, wait, wait… And repeat.

Anyway, if Google is indeed gearing up to launch a new Nexus 7, then why not just launch it on Monday anyway? A press release tomorrow, timed just right with, you know, another event, could steal plenty of thunder from that other company, even if it is just an upgraded version of your already available 7-inch tablet.

I think the most obvious reason why Google doesn’t do this is the software. Rumors point to Android 4.2 being on board the tablet with more memory, so it would make sense for Google to want to show it off on stage with the newest Android version on board. More to the point, though, is that I don’t think they want to launch the Nexus 7 with 32GB of memory with Android 4.2 before they have a chance to show it off. And they certainly don’t want to launch it with Android 4.1, and then have to send out updates over the air to get everyone caught up. That’d just be an extra step not worth taking. If the tablet is running Android 4.2, that is.

Still, I don’t think it would hurt too much if Google were to make the 32GB Nexus 7 available starting tomorrow. Phase out the 8GB model entirely. Meaning, remove that “coming soon” display, and then pop in the 32GB option instead. Don’t make the 32GB model “coming soon,” though. No, just make it available. If Android 4.2 is on board, and the changes aren’t as drastic as, say, an OS-wide revamp, then I’m pretty sure you could get away with it for a few days.

Then again, if Android 4.2 is a big update, then scrap that plan entirely and wait until you get on stage to show it off.
