Next in line to report third quarter 2012 results? Sprint. Today the folks from the Now Network shared their numbers for Q3 2012, which includes nearly 900,000 net additions to the Sprint platform. The carrier finished Q3 with almost 56 million subscribers, including 32.1 million postpaid users and 15.4 million of the prepaid variety. When it comes to devices, Sprint notes that it sold around 1.5 million iPhones during Q3 and that it also surpassed the 1 million LTE smartphones sold mark before the arrival of the iPhone 5.
By the time that the third quarter wrapped up, Sprint had wireless retail service revenues of $7.2 billion, a five percent year over year increase. Wireless operating expenses for the quarter settled at $8.3 billion, a drop from the $8.7 billion figure reported in Q2 2012. Finally, Sprint reported a net loss for the quarter of $767 million.
That's not all of the news that Sprint had to share, though, as the company also took the wraps off of some new 4G LTE tablet data plans that'll be available starting November 11. Existing Sprint smartphone customers on a qualifying smartphone plan can add an LTE tablet to their account at a discounted rate that offers 100MB of data for $10 per month or 1GB of data for $15 per month. The four regular plans that Sprint will be offering for LTE tablets include:
None of those plans require a contract, and Sprint also says that it's waiving the activation fee for all 3G/LTE tablets for a limited time. Plans similar in size and price are also available for 4G LTE mobile broadband devices. These new LTE plans will be arriving just in time for buyers of the new cellular-enabled and Sprint-capable iPad mini and fourth generation iPad, which are expected to begin landing a couple of weeks after the November 2 launch of the Wi-Fi-only models. As for Sprint's Q3 2012 numbers, it looks like the quarter was a bit of a mixed bag. Sprint still saw a net loss for the quarter, but that loss is a drop from the $1.374 billion loss it reported in Q2 2012. Sprint will be hosting a conference call to discuss its earnings later this afternoon, and we'll be sure to let you know if Hesse and Co. have any other important information to share.
