Remember that Sprint Direct Connect Now Android app that Hesse and Co. first teased back in May? Sprint officially took the wraps off of it today, announcing that the app is available to download from the Google Play store. The Direct Connect Now app enables compatible Android devices to communicate with other Sprint Direct Connect and Nextel Direct Connect devices using Sprint's push-to-talk Direct Connect service. The app features call alerts to alert users when others would like to chat with them, support for Group Connect with up to 21 participants, contact syncing and touchscreen controls.
Sprint says that the Kyocera Rise is currently compatible with its Direct Connect Now app, adding that support for the LG Optimus Elite and other devices is coming soon. Interested Sprint customers can mosey on over to the Google Play store to download the app right now. In order to use the app, subscribers will need to sign up for Direct Connect service, which is included in some plans and is available as a $5 add-on for others. Sprint currently offers rugged Sprint Direct Connect handsets from Kyocera, including the DuraCore, DuraPlus and DuraXT. All three meet military specification 810G for dust, shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, blowing rain and immersion. Each comes with GPS navigation and can access 3G speeds on Sprint’s broadband CDMA network.
The Sprint Direct Connect portfolio also includes the Motorola Admiral, a rugged 3G Android smartphone with touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard that is Wi-Fi-enabled and mobile hotspot capable.
