Time to put on your sleuthing hats, Android fans, because some new images of what may be LG's Nexus device have made their way online tonight. The photos have been posted as part of an album by an xda-developers user and show a black slab with stickers on its rear that read "LG-E960." That model number has popped up in the news before, as it belongs to a mysterious device that Droid-Life spotted passing through the FCC late last week. Also on the back of the device is what looks to be a camera and flash, while the sides feature silver buttons that are likely the volume and lock keys.
Moving on to the software, the home screen of the device is running what looks to be a vanilla version of Jelly Bean. A photo of the About phone screen lists the handset's model number as "Full JellyBean on Mako," and beneath that the Android version is 4.1.2. The Mako name appears again in the Build number section of the About phone page.
While we likely won't know for sure whether or not this is indeed the rumored LG Nexus handset until Google actually introduces the thing, the device in these photos does have a few things going for it. Its design looks similar to that of the LG Optimus G, which is looks like a black rectangle. Rumors from late last week claimed that the LG Nexus is based off of the Optimus G, so there's that. Then there's the name Mako, which is a kind of shark. Google is known for giving fishy codenames to its Nexus devices, like "mahimahi" for the Nexus One and "tuna" for the family of Galaxy Nexus phones. The good news for all of us (im)patiently awaiting news on the next Nexus is that an announcement is reportedly due at the end of this month, so we may not be waiting much longer to learn whether or not this device is the real deal.
