Something we see fairly frequently in the smartphone world is a handset that launches in black, only to be re-released some months later with a new white body. It appears that the Samsung Galaxy S III may be planning to flip that trend around, though. The Galaxy S III is now available in either Pebble Blue or Marble White (with a Garnet Red model on AT&T), but it looks like a black version could be on the way. Samsung recently posted several images promoting both the Olympics and the Galaxy S III on its Facebook page, and in some of the photos there's a Galaxy S III that appears to be black. However, some parts of the photos look to be blue, suggesting that this is actually a blue Galaxy S III that just looks darker for one reason or another.
The black Galaxy S III rumor gained just a bit more traction today, though, as an image posted by Android Police shows a listing for just such a device inside U.K. retailer Carphone Warehouse's inventory system. The entry is for a "Samsung Galaxy S3 Black" and is right next to listings for both the blue and white versions of Samsung's flagship handset.
While this black version of the Galaxy S III is far from official, there's certainly a possibility that Samsung is planning such a model. The company hasn't been shy about releasing new versions of existing handsets in the past (like white versions of the Galaxy S II variants), and now that it's already got white, red and blue, a black version sounds like a plausible option for another Galaxy S III. For now we'll just have to use our imaginations to think about what a black Galaxy S III might look like and what kind of name Samsung would give it (Obsidian Black? Onyx-not-the-Pokémon Black?).
