New month, new Android distribution figures. Google has updated its charts showing how the different versions of Android were distributed among devices accessing Google Play within the 14-day period ending on July 2. This latest report is a big one for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as that version has finally reached double-digit adoption. Version 4.0 was present on 10.9 percent of devices as of July 2, a number that's grown 3.8 percent since last month. Android 3.0 Honeycomb dropped a bit from last month's figures to finish at 2.4 percent penetration, and while Android 2.3 Gingerbread is still far and away the leading version, it also saw a drop of 1 percent to finish with a 64 percent share. Rounding out the list is Android 2.2 Froyo at 17.3 percent, Android 2.1 Eclair at 4.7 percent, Android 1.6 Donut with 0.5 percent and Android 1.5 Cupcake at 0.2 percent.
It definitely took some time, but Ice Cream Sandwich has finally made its way onto one-tenth of Android devices accessing Google Play. Expect that number to continue to grow next month as more devices are updated (like the DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX) and released to market (like the Galaxy S III) with ICS in tow. As for the new latest flavor of Android, version 4.1 Jelly Bean isn't yet being counted in Google's statistics, but it'll be interesting to see how far sales of the Nexus 7 and updates for devices like the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S can push Android 4.1 in its debut on the charts.
