It's been confirmed this morning that Beats Electronics, known for its Beats By Dr. Dre headphones, is acquiring streaming music service MOG. MOG founder and CEO David Hyman explained that "the addition of MOG's music service to the Beats portfolio will provide a truly end-to-end music experience," but the exec wouldn't reveal exactly how the two companies plan to intermingle their products, saying only that "time will tell exactly how we integrate our products and services." Beats COO Luke Woods says that his team was impressed with MOG's ability to offer their catalog in high-quality 320kbps format and the service's commitment to being available on multiple platforms, including smartphones.
Back in August of last year, HTC invested $300 million in Beats, making it a majority owner in the headphone maker. HTC currently bundles Beats audio software in with its smartphones, and while the manufacturer also included Beats headphones with some of its past handsets, it's stopped doing so with more recent products. It reamins to be seen whether or not MOG will see any love from HTC now that this deal is official, but it could definitely be something to keep an eye out for. MOG currently offers a catalog of over 16 million tracks and allows for free streaming online as well as unlimited ad-free streaming for $4.99 per month and unlimited mobile usage for $9.99 per month.
