When Apple announced iCloud last year alongside iOS 5, the company also revealed that it planned to shut down its MobileMe service on June 30, 2012. Since then, Apple has been urging MobileMe users to download their photos and iDisk data and to transfer their information to iCloud. The calendar has now flipped into July 2012, and MobileMe has indeed been given the axe. However, navigating to the MobileMe website shows that folks that still haven't gotten around to migrating their MobileMe account and downloading their data can still do so "for a limited time."
Introduced way back in 2008, MobileMe supplied paying subscribers with an @me.com email address and included features like contacts and calendar sync, online storage using iDisk and Find My iPhone, the last of which was eventually made free to use. Now Apple is focused on iCloud, which is free and also offers things such as contacts and calendar syncing, but adds in things like Photo Stream and online iOS device backup. While Apple has been warning MobileMe users of the iCloud transition since last year, it's good to see that those customers are still able download their data for a little longer. There's no telling how much longer the option will be available, though, so if you're a former MobileMe subscriber that has yet to make the move to iCloud, it may not be a bad idea to get to transitioning.
