After a great week of voting on the Official Smartphone Rankings, the top three phones fell into place with the HTC EVO 4G LTE landing in third place. So on this Wednesday June 20, 2012 we feature PhoneDog fan Gidon Halbfinger's review of the HTC EVO 4G LTE.
Great phone, poor network until LTE comes out. By Gidon Halbfinger, posted: Jun 13
This phone is absolutely stunning. The screen is incredible - great pixel density and resolution. It's lightning fast, and can handle high-end games very well. I've dropped a few calls in areas with spotty coverage, but I think that has more to do with Sprint than the phone itself, as I was dropping calls with my previous phone as well. Battery life was better than expected. I can easily last a whole day - in CDMA-only mode, this thing gets very good standby time, even with a bunch of things syncing in the background. The screen does suck up some juice when it's on, but it's not terrible for such a bright and hi-res display. The design is very hit-or-miss. The phone is extremely light, and razor-thin, and the kickstand is very sturdy. However, some people may not like the contrast between the top and bottom halves; the top half is glossy [fingerprint-able] plastic, the bottom is matte black-painted aluminum. A quick web search will yield instructions on how to sand the top plastic for a matte look if you're the DIY type - some might feel this is an upgrade worth risking. Overall, a fantastic phone. Fast, gorgeous screen, very responsive. HTC's Sense interface is beautiful as always, and does little to slow down the phone. Also, if one is interested in rooting/hacking the device, there have been a plethora of well known developers buying one, so there should be a great community active in developing ROMs, themes and such. The EVO 4G LTE even has some advantages over the One X - namely its kickstand, bigger battery, and removable memory card slot. However, Sprint's poor network does dull the appeal for those looking on from another carrier. I'd definitely recommend the phone to anyone on Sprint's network - I firmly believe it's their best phone.
