Yesterday Apple officially took the wraps off of iOS 6 and several of its new features, including turn-by-turn navigation and FaceTime over cellular. And while iOS 6 will be coming to previous-gen devices like the iPhone 3GS and iPad 2, those devices won't be gaining all of the new features found in the next version of iOS, and Apple today revealed exactly which parts of iOS 6 won't be heading to its older products. For example, Flyover and turn-by-turn navigation in Apple's new Maps app will only be available to the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the new iPad. The ability to use FaceTime over a cellular connection will be limited to the iPhone 4S and new iPad, as will Siri. A few features that will be enabled in iOS 6 on the iPhone 4 and iPad 2, though, include Shared Photo Stream, VIP mailboxes and Offline Reading List.
In case you missed the announcement yesterday, Apple has said that iOS 6 will be compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, fourth generation iPod touch, iPad 2 and the new iPad. It's definitely a bummer to see that some of iOS 6's new features won't be made available to all of the devices that'll be able to run the OS, especially in the case of the iPhone 3GS. The 3GS is getting pretty long in the tooth at this point, though, so it's not a total shock to see that it won't be getting the full iOS 6 experience. As for when iOS 6 will be launching, the software is currently available in beta form to registered iOS developers, and a full public release is expected this fall.
