It's the start of a new month, which means it's time to take a peek at Google's latest Android distribution figures. These numbers are based on the number of Android devices that accessed Google Play within a 14-day period ending on June 1. Google's latest dessert, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, saw some more growth this month, growing from 4.9 percent in May to 7.1 percent in June. That's still quite a bit behind the leader of the Android pack, which is version 2.3 Gingerbread. Android 2.3 accounted for 65 percent of devices that hopped onto Google Play during the period, a slight increase from its 64.4 share last month.
The second largest version of Android on Google's chart is version 2.2 Froyo, which finished with a 19.1 percent share. The remaining handset-specific versions of Android all finished with less than 10 percent of the pie, with Android 2.1 Eclair claiming a 5.2 percent share, Android 1.6 Donut with 0.5 percent and Android 1.5 Cupcake with 0.3 percent. Meanwhile, the tablet-only Android 3.x Honeycomb was present on 2.7 percent of devices that access Google Play in the two weeks leading up to June 1.
This latest batch of numbers follows the same trends that we've been seeing over the past couple of months, with ICS and Gingerbread growing and other versions dropping slightly. Android 4.0's increase is owed to updates for devices like the HTC Amaze 4G as well as sales of new ICS-equipped phones like HTC's One X and One S, and it'll be interesting to see how ICS grows once Samsung's Galaxy S III begins making its way to U.S. carrier shelves.
