Bad news for those of you looking forward to NVIDIA's Tegra chips with integrated LTE, as it looks like they may not be hitting the market until next year. NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang mentioned back in February that the chipsets, codenamed "Grey," would begin appearing in devices later in 2012. However, during NVIDIA's first quarter earnings call earlier today, the exec disclosed that the Grey chipsets are now due sometime next year. The pairing of Tegra 3 processors with LTE modems from NVIDIA's partners are still on track to debut in the second half this year, Huang said, later adding that they may not hit until closer to the end of the year. Huang's statement from the call:
"Looking forward, you'll see Tegra 3 LTE phones with partners' baseband processors in the second half of this year and then next year with our own LTE baseband processors as well."
That's definitely a bit of a bummer for folks that are eager to get some Tegra with integrated LTE action going. That said, it's good to hear that NVIDIA is still expecting Tegra 3 with partner LTE modems to start landing later this year, even if we're still stuck with a vague release window. While NVIDIA waits for those chipsets begin arriving, it looks like the company will have to sit by and watch other chips (like Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4) slapped into U.S.-bound LTE devices like the AT&T One X.
