Honestly, I can't imagine all the hard choices that a phone designer, and the huge manufacturers who hire those designers, has to make on a daily basis. One feature versus another feature, or one design choice over another. And it probably only gets harder the more phones you launch. Hopefully HTC doesn't have to worry too much about that this year. But, it's HTC that has me thinking about those choices, and why a company makes one decision over another.

It's been a long time coming, really. I've actually been thinking about this off and on since HTC officially unveiled the One X. To be specific, I started thinking about it the moment that HTC decided to unveil two different versions of the One X. The "international" version, and the one that's headed here to the States.

As much as I've been thinking about it, I've realized how bothered I am about it. Truthfully, it probably shouldn't be that big of a deal, especially considering the State-side One X is still a good device all on its own, but it just rubs me the wrong way. But it has me thinking about which features a company should be picking over another.

Here in the States, wireless carriers are all about 4G. 4G LTE, or HSPA+ or whatever they're calling 4G these days. In any event, carriers like Verizon are focused entirely on that standard and nothing less. Which is fine, to a point, but I'm wondering if carriers should be choosing that over, well, anything else.

Especially when it comes to the processor. There's obviously a focus on quad-core processors. People want it. People are actually begging for it, in some cases. So why on Earth HTC would decide that a dual-core processor would be a better choice here in the States, just to have 4G LTE on board, is beyond me.

In truth, I understand that there are plenty of people out there who are currently within 4G LTE-covered markets who want an LTE phone, especially one like the One X. But, there are still a bunch of other people out there who aren't in a 4G LTE area, especially when you think about AT&T coverage, who would probably prefer to have a quad-core handset.

There are plenty of hard choices. Super AMOLED Plus, or just Super AMOLED. Snapragon or Exynos. Super thin, or just kind of thin. There are options, choices, and all of them are hard. It isn't just hard for the consumer sometimes, but often times just as hard for the manufacturer.
