Still have a Windows Mobile 6.x (not Windows Phone) handset kicking around? If so, take note: Microsoft has announced that it'll be shutting down the Windows Marketplace for Mobile 6.x on May 9th, meaning that users will no longer be able to buy or download apps directly from the Marketplace. Any apps already installed on your device will still work after May 9th rolls around, and Microsoft notes that users will still be able to install apps from other sources, like directly from a developer or through third-party app outlets.
Considering that Microsoft moved from Windows Mobile to Windows Phone quite a while ago, it's no surprise to learn that the Redmond firm has elected to shut down the Windows Marketplace for Mobile 6.x. Of course, there are still some folks out there toting around a Windows Mobile 6.x device (like the HD2 you see above), but thanks to the wonders of the Internet, those folks will still be able to get apps and other goodies for their trusty WinMo handset from other sources. How many of you ever owned a Windows Mobile device? If you did, go ahead and swing by our comments section to pour one out for Windows Marketplace for Mobile 6.x and reminisce about your past Windows Mobile handsets.
