All of us regular folk are still waiting for Apple to push out an official version of iOS 5.1 for our various iDevices, but server logs have shown that there are some iPads out there perusing the Web with iOS 6.0 in tow. The folks at Ars Technica have discovered browser user agent strings in their server logs showing devices identifying themselves as iPads running iOS 6.0. The user agents in question came from IP addresses belonging to Apple's corporate block in Cupertino.
The report from Ars Technica also notes that there were 365 visits to the site from devices with a screen resolution of 2048x1536, which just so happens to be the rumored resolution of the iPad 3. There's no indicator that these devices are actually the new iPad, but Ars suggests that since there are so few devices with that resolution, it could well be Apple's new slate. However, MacRumors notes that the Retina display-packing iPhone 4 and 4S report their resolution as being 480x320 instead of their actual 960x640 resolution so that the content displayed doesn't become too small to read, so it's likely that the new iPad would follow a similar method of identifying its screen resolution.
So does this mean we'll soon be seeing iOS 6.0 make its debut? Probably not, as these reports of iOS 6.0-powered iPads likely stem from Apple employees testing the new software, which shouldn't come as a surprise. What we could very well see soon is iOS 5.1, which registered iOS developers have been beta testing for some time now. With the iPad 3 event coming on March 7th, many expect iOS 5.1 to also be introduced at the gathering. Whatever Apple does end up trotting out on stage on Wednesday, you can bet that we'll report it as it happens, so stay tuned for more.
