Motorola pushed out some emails to owners of the "Google Experience Device" version of the Wi-Fi Xoom earlier this month informing them that a project for that device was in the works, but we haven't heard anything from Moto since. That's changed today, as the company got in touch with those same Xoom users to say that the update would be starting this evening and, because it was delayed, the testing period will last through the weekend. There's no mention of exactly what this project entails, but Moto does explain that since it involves a Google Experience Device, it has "less insight to timing" than normal. The relevant part of the mail being sent out is as follows:
"Thanks for your patience as we've waited for this project to begin. Because we are dealing with a Google Experience Device (GED) we have less insight to timing than we would usually have.
However, I'm happy to announce that we will start the update this evening. Because it was delayed a few days, we will also have additional time to test; we will let it run through the weekend."
The fact that Motorola mentions that the update is for Google Experience Devices has led many to believe that the project in question might involve Ice Cream Sandwich. Whether or not that's actually the case remains to be seen, but the good news is that with the update rollout kicking off tonight, it may not be long before we find out once and for all. Stay tuned!
UPDATE: Looks like this update is indeed Ice Cream Sandwich. A tester sent the image you see below in to Android Central, showing that his Xoom has been updated to Android 4.0.3. Hooray!
