Samsung Epic 4G Gingerbread update coming today, Sprint confirms

Start your update engines, Samsung Epic 4G owners. Sprint has officially announced the Gingerbread update for the Epic 4G on its forums, confirming that the new software will be released to users today. The update is indeed build number EI22 (S:D700.0.5S.EI22) and includes the following improvements:

  • Upgrade of the Google OS from Froyo to Gingerbread (Android 2.3)
  • Audible Sprint AIRAVE™ notifications when answering call
  • SMS messages sent without area code
  • PRL and Profile update
  • EAS (Exchange Activesync) email displaying HTML
  • Bluetooth headset sound improvements
  • Fully visible date on device lock screen

Sprint says that the update will be released in stages and that all Epic 4G users should receive it in the next 10 days, so don't fret if there's still no Gingerbread on your handset by the end of the day. Any Epic 4G folk out there that are feeling a tad impatient can try to manually check for the update by going to Menu > Settings > About phone > System updates > Update Android. It's not a guarantee that you'll pull the update down, but if anything it'll help pass the time until 2.3 makes its way to your neck of the woods. Epic 4G owners, be sure to give us a shout in the comments below when you get Gingerbread up and running on your device! And don't be afraid to do a little dance while you're at it. I'd say you've earned it.
