MetroPCS bringing EVDO support to around 20 percent of its towers

Late last year saw MetroPCS launch its shiny new LTE network in addition to its existing 1xRTT coverage, leaving it with 2G and 4G networks but no 3G to speak of. That'll be changing soon, though, as MetroPCS CFO Braxton Carter has announced that his carrier plans to add 3G EVDO support to a little less than 20 percent of its towers. Exactly which markets will get access to MetroPCS EVDO isn't known.  Carter did say that MetroPCS would like to move more customers to its LTE network, which is currently available in 14 markets, but that it probably won't be able to until it can add more affordable LTE Android phones to its lineup. Currently MetroPCS offers two LTE handsets: the Samsung Craft (messaging phone) and the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Indulge.

It's kind of interesting to see MetroPCS proclaim that it plans to offer 3G connectivity in some markets after going 2G/4G only for so long. Still, it seems like a good move for folks that aren't quite ready to make the jump to LTE or don't live in an area with 4G coverage. Now we just need to find out which cities will be graced with EVDO support. MetroPCS folk, you'll let us know if you manage to scrounge up a 3G signal in your neck of the woods, won't you?
