HTC has been cranking out smartphones using platforms like Android and Windows Phone 7/Windows Mobile for some time now, but a new report has emerged confirming that the Taiwanese firm may soon snap up an operating system to call its very own. In an interview with the Economic Observer of China, HTC chairwoman Cher Wang confirmed that her company is considering purchasing its own OS. "We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse," Wang said. No specific OS was mentioned, but Wang did add that HTC can use "any OS" that it wants thanks to its ability to "make things different from [its] rivals on the second or third layer of a platform" thanks to things like the Sense UI.
Since HP announced that it would no longer be producing webOS hardware, rumors have been flying about certain companies licensing the operating system or even purchasing it outright. HTC has been mentioned as one of the firms that could adopt webOS, though it has never actually come out and confirmed an interest in the HP-owned OS. What do you all make of this news? Should HTC buy its own OS or should it stick with the Android/WP7 combo that it's got going on now?
