Froyo still the king of the Android hill, but Gingerbread is gaining ground

Every now and again, Google updates its Android developer site with information on the distribution of each OS, giving us some insight into which dessert is most popular and and which is on the decline. El Goog updated this chart recently and, although the leader of the pack is unchanged from the last time we checked the numbers, the rest of the lineup is fairly different.

First up is Android 2.2 Froyo, which appeared on 59.4 percent of all devices accessing the Android Market in the two weeks leading up to July 5th. That number is down just slightly from the when we last checked the figures in April. Taking second place is Android 2.3.3/2.3.4 with 17.6 percent of the market. Versions 2.3 through 2.3.2 are present on one percent of Androids in the wild, meaning Gingerbread as a whole is up to 18.6 percent. In third is Android 2.1 Eclair with 17.5 percent, down from 27.2 percent a couple of months ago. Finally, Android 1.5 and 1.6 are (unfortunately) still present, claiming 1.4 percent and 2.2 percent of the devices in the wild. How's Honeycomb, you ask? It's sitting at 0.4 percent for version 3.0 and 0.5 percent for 3.1, meaning the tablet OS's market share has grown quite a bit from April but is still makes up less than one percent of all Android devices.

While we'd certainly like to see Gingerbread on more than 18.6 percent of devices considering that it originally debuted way back in December 2010, it's still pretty awesome to see the OS appear on nearly one-fifth of products after it claimed less than three percent of devices in April. With devices like the ThunderBolt, G2, and a handful of DROIDs getting in on the GBread love soon, hopefully the growth will continue. So, fair readers, which version of Android are you currently packing?
