Although regular Joe Schmoes like you and me will have to wait until this fall to sink our teeth into iOS 5, developers were given access to the first beta version of Apple's new mobile OS yesterday. It didn't take long for those people to begin digging around inside iOS 5's code, and they've already unearthed code that hints at upcoming iDevices. The new products in question are two new models of the iPad: "iPad 3,1" and "iPad 3,2." The current generation of iPad has three models, so the fact that there are only two versions referenced in iOS 5 lends credence to the rumors that the next iPad will come in a WiFi-only flavor as well as a model that features both GSM and CDMA connectivity. The iOS 5 code also contains references to "iPhone 4,1" and "iPhone 4,2," aka iPhone 4S/5, although those two models originally appeared in the iOS 4.3 betas. Interestingly, there was no mention of an unannounced iPod touch found in the code.
It's worth noting that just because a device model number appears — or, in the case of the iPod touch, doesn't appear — inside iOS code, that doesn't mean that a device will or won't be coming to market. As TUAW points out, the "iPhone 3,2" has never come to market despite the fact that it was once referenced in iOS (GSM iPhone 4 is "iPhone 3,1" and CDMA iPhone 4 is "iPhone 3,3"). Still, it's kind of interesting that there's no mention of a new iPod touch in the iOS 5 code, especially considering that the device is likely on track for a refresh in later this year. We're sure to see more betas of iOS 5 in the coming months, though, so it's possible that the device may be added in at a later date.
