Remember how the Motorola DROID X was due to be updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread beginning today? Well, a few more details about the update and how it'll be rolled out have emerged, and it sounds like most of us could be waiting a few days for 2.3 to arrive. Verizon's support account said earlier today on Twitter that the DX's Gingerbread update will begin to trickle out to a "select number of customers on 5/27/11." The good news is that the users will be able to initiate the update themselves, although you'll have to wait until June 1st to pull it down on your own.
Also of note is that folks taking part in Motorola's DROID X update test just got some more details about what their update process will be like. The info sent to testers is as follows:
- "The update will be pushed late tonight. If you go to bed, it should be waiting for you in the morning. West Coast members and night owls may be up to see it.
- "It’s a good idea to keep your phone charged if possible and plugged in overnight. You don’t have to keep it on, but you can.
- "If you are rooted, you must flash back to the standard Droid X software to receive the update. (Even then we can’t guarantee the update will work.)"
By the sound of things, it seems that it'll mostly be testers that'll be getting the DROID X Gingerbread update starting today, although a few normal folk will likely be able to get in on the fun, too. Of course, as Android Central points out, it wouldn't be surprising to see the update made available for manual installation once it does begin hitting handsets in the wild.
