When Apple decided to switch to a microSIM for use in the iPhone 4/iPad, some folks were a little frustrated because the smaller-than-normal SIM card made it difficult to quickly switch between devices, which is one of the biggest reasons that folks opt to use a GSM device. Unfortunately for those users, Apple is proposing a switch to a standardized SIM card that is even smaller than the microSIM, Reuters reports. The purpose of the new SIM would be to allow manufacturers to create even smaller, slimmer phones than the ones already on the market. Apple's plans have already won support from European carrier Orange, as well as other "major mobile operators," said Anne Bouverot, head of mobile services at Orange. There are still a lot of issues that need to work out but, if everything goes smoothly, devices with the new SIM card could begin appearing as soon as next year.

We've heard in the past that Apple has considered implementing an embedded SIM card in its devices, but the carriers didn't exactly love that idea, fearing that it would cut them out of the relationships with their customers. This new, smaller SIM could be a way to allow Apple to create even thinner iPhones while still keeping the carriers happy.
