We've heard rumors of the possibility of BlackBerry devices running Android apps a couple of times in the past, but there's never been any evidence of that. At least not until now. The folks over at ShopSavvy were recently poring over their usage logs and spotted something interesting: there were a few devices that identified themselves as BlackBerrys using the Android version of ShopSavvy. Oh, and those devices just so happened to be in use in Waterloo, Ontario, where RIM headquarters is based. There were a few occurrences in January and one in February as well. The stats as posted by ShopSavvy:
- BlackBerry 8300 ran ShopSavvy on January 31, 2011
- BlackBerry 8600 ran ShopSavvy on January 17 and 24, 2011
- BlackBerry 8520 ran ShopSavvy on February 7, 2011
There are a couple of possible ways to explain what's going on here. Either RIM really is planning to implement the ability to use Android apps and they're testing that feature on some random devices, or someone heard the BlackBerry/Android app rumors and just decided to mess with everyone. Seeing a BlackBerry, whether it's the PlayBook or a handset, would be a pretty interesting move, so I'm hoping that it's the former. Still, it's probably a good idea to keep a few grains of salt nearby, just in case.
