Android 2.3 is a Nexus S exclusive, other devices to get 2.4 instead?

Ever since Gingerbread was revealed back in December, Android users the world over have been anxiously awaiting the moment that their handset would be upgraded to 2.3. However, if a new rumor is to be believed, that update is never going to come. The folks over at Android Central are claiming that Android 2.3 is being reserved especially for the Nexus S and that Android 2.4, which is also likely to arrive under the Gingerbread moniker, will be the update that's rolled out to other Android phones.

This rumor may come as a bit of a surprise to some, but it wouldn't be the first time that such a thing happened. If you'll remember back to November 2009, the Motorola DROID debuted with Android 2.0 and was the only device to sport the OS. Other Android devices simply went straight to 2.1, which was also named Eclair. Since Gingerbread is set to follow a similar pattern by claiming to be both Android 2.3 and 2.4, it wouldn't be shocking to see the Nexus S end up as the only handset to claim 2.3. I just hope that we'll begin seeing Android phones finally get bumped up to Gingerbread soon, regardless of which version number it is.
