Android 2.3 has only been around for about a month and a half and is still only available on one handset, but a new report claims that Android 2.4 is coming sooner than some may have expected. According to Pocket-lint, Viewsonic will be launching its ViewPad 4 with Android 2.4 in tow some time this April. The update will reportedly still be called Gingerbread and will ensure that dual-core apps built for devices running Honeycomb will function correctly on single-core products. Additionally, the source claims that Ice Cream Sandwich will be Android 3.1.

Ever since we spotted a Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc claiming to run Android 2.4 at CES, we expected 2.4 to continue with the Gingerbread name. This news could explain why we still haven't seen any Android phones besides the Nexus S running 2.3, although it'll be a little disappointing if we have to wait until April to see other handsets get updated to Gingerbread. What do you all think? Considering that it can take some time to push out updates for devices with UI skins, should manufacturers bother releasing updates to 2.3, or would you rather them wait for 2.4?
