Motorola's DROID, which is one of the few Android phones graced with a completely stock build of the operating system, also happens to be one of the first handsets that gets updated to new versions of the OS. Will that be the case with Gingerbread? That's exactly what Verizon is trying to decide right now. An image straight from Verizon's system was leaked to the folks at Droid-Life, explaining to Big Red's employees that the carrier is collaborating with Google and will be evaluating which handsets in the lineup will get called up to Android 2.3 in the next few months.
There are several factors that go into deciding whether or not a particular phone will get brought up to the latest version of Android, but if your handset was released in the last 6-8 months, it's probably a safe bet that you'll be updated. When you'll actually get the update is a different story, though, and depends on your manufacturer and how eager they are to push out the new software. One of the biggest questions here is whether or not the DROID will get 2.3, and I'm inclined to believe that it will. We've seen several times that the DROID is still the most popular Android phone out there, and since it runs vanilla Android, Moto doesn't have to worry about skinning it or anything like that. What devices do you think will be updated to Android 2.3? Which ones (outside of the Nexus One) will be the first to get it?
