We were just wondering which handset would get the update to Android 2.3, but it looks like the answer may already be here. There are a number of reports going around saying that Gingerbread is in the process of rolling out the Nexus One units, although there hasn't been any screenshots or confirmations just yet. There's some new features found in 2.3 that the Nexus One wouldn't get thanks to hardware limitations (NFC), but most of the improvements should arrive intact.
I think we all kind of expected Google to push Gingerbread out to the Nexus One -- even with the Nexus S, it's still their baby -- but I'm kind of surprised that they're pushing it out already. Still, it's a welcome surprise, and I'm sure that everyone still carrying the N1 will appreciate being brought up to Android 2.3 while newer handsets are stuck on versions of Android that are more outdated today than they were yesterday. If you've got a Nexus One and get Gingerbread, be sure to come back and let us know, k?
UPDATE: It doesn't look like the Nexus One will be getting Gingerbread just yet. Reto Meier, Google's Android Developer Advocate, has tweeted that the Nexus One will be getting Android 2.3 "in a few weeks." Hang tight, N1 owners!
