Usually when you hear about a carrier wanting to increase capacity, they end up building more towers or something like that. AT&T and Sprint are switching things up a bit though, as the two carriers have filed a petition with the FCC to trade some spectrum licenses. If allowed, the swap would allow both carriers to increase capacity and allow for more growth in the future. So just who will be affected by the spectrum switch? AT&T wants to expand the following markets: Dallas-Ft. Worth, Denver, Des Moines-Quad Cities, Honolulu, Louisville-Lexington-Evansville, New Orleans-Baton Rouge, Oakland, Omaha, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, San Jose, and Spokane-Billings. Meanwhile, these Sprint markets would get more room to grow: Charlotte-Greensboro-Greenville, Cleveland, New Orleans, South Bend-Mishawaka, Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater.
It's always great to hear of a carrier trying to expand their services, but this is especially true when it takes place in an area that is known to have some issues, like AT&T has in San Francisco. The entire process should be ready for approval by the end of the year, so here's to hoping that customers in the above markets will see some changes soon.
