It's been a while since we've seen any news on MeeGo, but thankfully the MeeGo Conference going on this week has changed that. First up is video of a device running MeeGo 1.1 which, while obviously still not quite ready for primetime, is getting better each time we see it. The multitasking system is reminiscent of webOS, which isn't really a bad thing when you remember that many consider Palm's card setup to be one of the better implementations of multitasking in the industry. There's also a launcher to show all of the available applications and what looks like a nice notification system, as well. Considering that MeeGo is still in its infancy, though, there are some drawbacks to the OS in its current form. There is no support for active icons right now, meaning you won't be alerted to how many unread messages you have, and there is only one home screen available that has no widget support. Besides video of MeeGo in action, a roadmap of future OS updates has also come out of the conference. As you can see below, the next iteration of MeeGo, v1.2, is planned for April and will complete the handset user experience and include support for cameras, backup/restore, platform security, and several other features. MeeGo 1.3 will bring compatibility with both CDMA and LTE, suggesting that we won't be seeing any MeeGo-powered devices on Verizon or Sprint for almost another year, at least.
MeeGo definitely looks like a slick little OS and, like I said, it keeps improving every time that we see it. While there hasn't been much info out of this conference as to when we'll see a MeeGo handset actually come to market, Nokia has said that they're planning to launch a MeeGo device (like the N9) some time next year. Now that we've gotten a good look at the MeeGo software, it'd certainly be nice to see some more hardware, right? Then again, the N9 looks so nice that once it finally arrives, we may not need any other devices...
