Rumors have been flying about the various upcoming versions of Android, including Honeycomb and Ice Cream.  The thing is, we still don't know much about Gingerbread, which hasn't even been officially announced by Google yet.  Now we may know the version number of Google's next dessert, though, thanks to the Android "Issues" forum.  Someone with an "@google.com" email address has chimed in and said that version 2.3 of Android is a "major release."  As we all know, G comes after F in the alphabet, leading many to believe that Gingerbread will also be known as Android 2.3 when it finally launches.

Many have speculated that Gingerbread would end up being Android 2.5 or 3.0, but it looks like those guesses may have been a little off.  With all of the improvements planned for Gingerbread, I would be kind of surprised to see it arrive as 2.3 rather than 2.5.  In the end, though, the version number doesn't really matter that much.  What does matter is getting the new OS out and into the hands of eager Android users.  Unfortunately, we still don't know exactly when we'll see Gingerbread finally rolling out.  How about sharing some knowledge, Goog?
